Conceive Naturally : Fertility diet
Researchers from Harvard brought to light certain interesting facts about diet and fertility. They suggested that a majority of infertility problems due to ovulation disorders may be prevented through proper diet and exercise. Here are some of our tips to you based on scientific data.

• Decrease saturated fat intake

Fats that we consume are broadly divided into saturated fat and unsaturated fat. In general, saturated fats are solid at room temperature while unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature. Eating a diet rich in saturated fats is associated with a risk of ovulatory infertility. Foods with a high content of saturated fats include processed palm oil, coconut oil etc. Processed western foods such as doughnuts, pastries and cookies are also rich in saturated fats. These should be avoided.

• Increase plant proteins

Several studies have shown that vegetable proteins are better than animal proteins. Good sources of vegetable protein include lentils, soybeans, panneer, nuts and seeds. Using such foods in place of red meat reduces the risk of ovulatory infertility.

• Increase complex carbohydrates

Carbohydrates that are quickly digested are called simple carbohydrates and these have a high glycemic index that quickly raises blood sugar level. Sugar is an example of a simple carbohydrate. Complex carbohydrates such as that found in fruits are slowly digested and do not increase sugar levels as much. Intake of complex carbohydrates that also have a high fibre content improves fertility.

• Increase whole milk products

Researchers from the renowned Harvard University have shown that using whole milk rather than reduced fat milk products decreases the risk of infertility.

• Nutritional supplements

Also, as emphasized in the section how to get pregnant, start taking folic acid supplements for a few months before you plan to conceive. The standard recommendation is to take 400mcg of folic acid daily for most women. Your doctor may, however, individualize the dose for your special needs. Iron supplementation is also recommended.
