IVF, or In-vitro fertilisation, invented in 1990s is a technique used to help a woman get pregnant. It was started to help couples who didn’t get any benefit from other treatments. It is used when a human egg undergoes fertilisation with a sperm in a laboratory.

What is In-vitro fertilisation (IVF)?

In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) is an external fertilization technique where the process is carried out in a special culture dish instead of a woman’s fallopian tubes.

To whom is In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) more beneficial?

When all the other methods haven’t helped you and if you are really sure of having a child, then you should think about In-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Before you opt for In-vitro fertilisation (IVF), you may be required to undergo tests. These are done to ensure that there are no other problems which can be corrected by simpler means. Generally Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is tried before In-vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Stages involved in In-vitro fertilisation (IVF):

Stimulation phase: This phase involves the observation on the development of the follicles in the ovary during the first half of the menstrual cycle. To stimulate the number of eggs in the ovary or to increase the success rate of In-vitro fertilisation (IVF), fertility medicines may be given in regular intervals. Ultrasound scans at regular intervals ensure the development of the eggs.

Ovum retrieval: At Garbba Rakshambigai Fertility Centre, this procedure is done under the influence of anaesthesia. A thin needle is passed through the vagina with the help of ultrasound. The fluid which contains the eggs placed in a special culture dish separately. Some of these eggs may be frozen for future use. At the same time, the semen collected from the husband is concentrated and kept ready.

In-vitro Fertilization: Fertilization of the egg by the sperm which is the defining feature of this process. The harvested egg has been kept in a special chamber externally. The culture dish which has the sperm and the egg is places in an incubator to maintain the temperature, gaseous and humidity to ensure the healthy development of the embryos.

Embryo transfer and conception: The embryos kept in the incubator are examined to select the best ones, which is then transferred to the prospective mother. This is a painless procedure performed under intravenous sedation. The process in which the catheter is used to place the fertilized eggs directly into the uterus is called embryo transfer. Once the process gets completed, you are advised to take bed rest for 24 hours.

Possibility of In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) to be successful: The success rates depend upon the type of In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment and age of the woman. For women below 35, the success rate are around 40.7% and above 35 are between 11-30%. If the treatment is fresh transfer, the success rate is around 56.6% and in case of frozen transfer it is 37.2%.
