Intrauterine insemination is a less expensive form of fertility treatment to facilitate fertilization.

What happens in Intrauterine insemination (IUI)?

In Intrauterine insemination (IUI), healthy sperms that have been collected and concentrated are placed directly in the uterus around the time the woman's ovary releases eggs. Fertilization happens within the body of the woman.

Procedure of Intrauterine insemination (IUI):

Before beginning Intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment, a careful examination has to be done to check if the eggs are matured enough to perform the process. Both the husband and wife have to be thoroughly examined to carry out the process of semen analysis. To increase the chances of pregnancy, fertility drugs may be given. During the process of semen analysis, the semen sample is washed and made ready for ovulation to take place. Ultrasound are done to ensure optimal development of eggs. Insemination cycles are done at regular intervals to ensure proper ovulation. HCG injection is used to trigger at the time ovulation, 24-36 hours later Intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedure is timed. The concentrated sperms are then placed into the uterus through the cervix with the help of a small catheter. Once this is done, you should lie on your back for a minimum of 15 minutes.

Advantages of Intrauterine insemination (IUI):
• The semen analysis process may help to overcome male factor for infertility.
• When cervical mucus is a problem, the cervix is bypassed as a solution.
• This is a more simple and less expensive treatment when compared to In-vitrofertilisation (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), especially when the hormones are not required
• This process can be combined with fertility boosting medicines

Is there a possibility to combine Intrauterine insemination (IUI) with fertility boosting medicines?

The chances of becoming pregnant is increased if you take fertility medication when taking Intrauterine insemination (IUI) treatment. This is most likely practised when the female factor is suspected.

What is Intrauterine insemination (IUI’s) success range?

The success rate of Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is dependent on several factors including the age of the woman, nature of the fertility problem, the technique of washing and preparing sperms, the use of fertility medicines and techniques used. When a couple has Intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedure performed every month, the success rate is between 35-45%. The success rate is much lower for women above 35 years of age or if fertility medicines are not used along with Intrauterine insemination (IUI).

Alternatives to Intrauterine insemination (IUI):

You can still repeat Intrauterine insemination (IUI) if it fails. You can get good success rates if it is repeated for around 3-6 cycles. The success rate of one cycle is between 10-20%, but it increases to 35-45% for multiple trials. If Intrauterine insemination (IUI) has failed a number of times, then you may have to switch to In-vitrofertilisation (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Is there a donor sperm option that goes well with Intrauterine insemination (IUI)?

This is a more suitable option for couples where the male factor is suspected. This is more useful in cases where the male partner suffers from azoospermia (absence of sperms). Healthy sperms are obtained from a sperm bank that specializes in obtaining, processing and storing semen. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) in this case is done using the donor sperms in the standard way. This type of Intrauterine insemination (IUI) has excellent success rates when used for the right patients at the right time.
