Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a technique in which a single human egg measuring around one tenth of a millimetre is injected with a single sperm which is 100 times smaller than the egg. In this technique a skilled embryologist uses a special manipulator.

Are Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and In-vitrofertilisation (IVF) similar?/h3>

For any couple who look at In-vitrofertilisation (IVF) and Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) practically they seem quite similar. The process which includes the development of follicles, fertilization of the eggs in the ovary, ovum retrieval, semen analysis are similar to the processes in In-vitrofertilisation (IVF). The difference in Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is that the sperm and egg need not be isolated in a special culture dish. An individual sperm and egg are chosen to be held in two arms of a special instrument called micromanipulator. A skilled embryologist then penetrates the egg using a single sperm. The fertilized embryos are then placed in a culture dish in an incubator to maintain the temperature, humidity. They are then monitored for development and later transferred to the uterus after a few days.

What are the benefits of Intracytoplasmic sperm injection ICSI?
• Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) can be used to provide the best possible results even with the hard to obtain sperms, like those having an inability to ejaculate due to a blockage.
• Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) lets the sperms to penetrate even when they are lesser in count or of poor quality
